I’ve been spending a lot of time playing on the fan created Marvel Heroes servers. Thousands of us have. They had to add a second server (2hitit) because so many of us have returned. I’ve been playing on the second server so as to keep the load lighter on the first server. Super worth it, as I never see any lag or queues.
What a nostalgic ride it’s been. Honestly, I don’t think I appreciated the game enough while it was live. There are so many fabulous features, massive amount of content, incredible voice acting, so much silliness. Most of all, this game is peak ARPG.
Side note on ARPG definition – (Because so many games call themselves ARPGS now a days that the term almost has no meaning anymore.) In this case I use the term to refer to ‘Diablo 2 a likes’ – click to move with three quarters camera, lots of loot with deep character customization and leveling options, stash management.
Squirrel Girl was the first character I unlocked. I could have gone with a more synergistic character (different heroes give different buffs to each other when leveled up), but really, this is about enjoying myself, so I went with my fave. Squirrel Girl is just full of joy; love her.
Yesterday I finally got her to max level (60). It took way longer than I expected, but that could be because I was just relearning the game and finding my footing.
So a bit of backstory, the game changed a lot when the devs aimed to make the game more console friendly. They called it the Biggest Update Ever and changed the name to Marvel Heroes Omega. I didn’t really play very much after this update, so much of this return has been discovering all the new things they added. To be fair, I forgot a lot of the stuff as well. It has been a hot minute since I played.
The fan server changed more things, everything has been made “free” as in earnable by playing the game. Because of the nature of the IP (Marvel is owned by Disney), it’s not a good idea for anyone to try and monetize this game, at least not without paying Disney a lot of money for the license. Disney has been known to send lawyers.
With Squirrel Girl at max level, its time to focus on other characters and rediscover the incredible amount of content.
